Sneak Peek News Leak! Toy-Based Movies

A spy attended a Hasbro stockholder’s event recently and snapped some pictures of some of the Hasbro game properties that are being developed by Universal Studios into movies. Toys are big news in movie development these days, with plans to bring some of the classic names from the world of toys to the silver screen.

They’ve already set a date to bring Ouija, based on the ‘talking board’ that was originally designed to communicate with spirits, to screens by November, 2012. There’s talk of Pierre Morel, who directed Taken (starring Liam Neeson), as the number one choice for director.

JJ Abrams (Star Trek, Cloverfield, Lost) is apparently developing a Micronauts movie (‘They Came From Inner Space’). One for nostalgia buffs there—I was a big fan of the Micronauts when I was a kid! No doubt they’ll be taking cues from the successful Transformers films for this one.

GI Joe 2 is in the works, with a first promotional image, though the director of the first film, Stephen Sommers (of Mummy fame) was not mentioned.

But wait, there’s more! A final slide showed logos for Battleship (Peter Berg directing), Clue (Gore Verbinski directing), Risk (Will Smith producing), Monopoly (Ridley Scott directing), Candyland (Kevin Lima directing), Stretch Armstrong (Rob Letterman directing), and of course Transformers.

Of course, nothing is set in stone yet, and companies tend to exaggerate the positive when presenting at stockholder meetings! It will be interesting to keep an eye on these over the next few years, and see which of them make it to screens—and with which directors…
